The Polish Way of Conducting Business

If you go to Poland as a Hungarian, keep the close Polish-Hungarian friendship of several decades in mind.

The Polish corporate hierarchy is more rigid than the one you got used to in Hungary. Always address your Polish partner using his/her official title. Address your partners by their first names only if they offer it.
Team spirit is stronger than in Hungary. Poles value cooperation and respect for the other.

They are welcoming and kind, easily winning their business partners. On the other hand, a business meeting may take longer to complete than in the US or even in Hungary. Polish people prefer to make sure that their business partner is trustworthy, which calls for the establishment of a deeper relation before committing to a business.

The foreign partner should always contact the subject matter expert most knowledgeable in the given field, otherwise it is taken as an offense.

The Polish Way of Negotiation

Protocol is of a central importance during meetings. It is recommended to establish a good personal relationship with our Polish business partner before even mentioning business.

Handshake is the usual way of greeting. When conducting business, close attention needs to be paid to small things, for example never to shake hands at the doorstep (literally: over the treshold).

During meetings everybody exchanges cards with everybody. Polish business cards contain information both in Polish and in English.

As most Polish businessmen go on Holidays in the Summer, try to arrange your meetings in the timeframe between September to May.

The tone used at meetings is usually firm, but welcoming. Handshake is the basic from of greeting.

Conventional dark suit is the accepted meeting dress code. Women may wear a short dress. The dress code for official and social events is conventional as well. Latest fashion trends are not recommended, their excessive use is to be avoided at all costs.

Punctuality is also key. Avoid touching, petting people. Polish people keep arm’s length distance as a minimum.
